Geels ORV Trail Report

GLDS has been the grant sponsor for the Geels ORV Trail since 2004, which covers brushing and signing and other trail improvement projects. Around 2015 we took on grading the trails as part of our grant.

Geels is an ORV Trail, comprised of two loops (Geels North and Geels South), that are about 25 miles in length each. The trail is open to ORVs that are 50″ in width or less. 50″ UTVs are not recommended as they will not be able to fit through some corners/sections due to angles and tree positions. Designated parking with vault toilet is located between both loops, on Moore Road, just east off of Old M76, about halfway between St Helen and Roscommon.

GLDS has put in tremendous work over the years to improve the trail beyond the standard brush/sign/grade. Projects include Trail Bed Restoration (getting rid of mudholes) and stump grinding to eliminate trail-side hazards.

Trail Update 4/26/26

Crews have been out over the last couple weeks to get the trails cleared. A March ice-storm brought down a lot of trees and debris, much worse than anything over the last 22 years, but also nothing of the scale from the ice storm damage inflicted north of Geels in 2025. Over 78 downed trees were cut and another 200 branches/slash were drug off the trail. As of this posting, both cut-off trails on the South loop need gone through plus the North loop has a handful of near-trail items that need removed. The trails are otherwise open and rideable. An excessively wet spring has overfilled many wet areas and we recommend avoiding the section of the north loop from the parking lot up to Pine Drive/Decker Rd.
